    Damien Hirst’s name is shown as though he is some kind of medical product. The title of the book, which comes from one of his sculptures, is represented in a periodic table. The design provided a starting point for much of the visual style for Hirst’s later project Pharmacy restaurant.     'Mandalas' features large-scale works from Hirst's recent concentric paintings. The images are brought together in their entirety in this extraordinary ten-volume artist's book. Hirst's career-long obsession with the minimalist aesthetics employed by pharmaceutical companies—the cool colors and simple geometric forms—first manifested in his series of Medicine Cabinets, conceived in while still at Goldsmiths College.

Nowadays we would visit a chemist if we need to have a prescription dispensed or obtain medicines or tablets. Modern medicine has been a recurring theme in Hirst’s work, and it is art which, for him becomes the great healer, a replacement for God, a mind. Hirst has described the installation as “the best show I’d done in my life at that point.” Wall-to-wall cabinets, fully stocked with empty pill packaging, were installed in the gallery room. A receptionist’s desk held apothecary bottles representing the traditional symbols of the pharmacy – earth, fire, air and water.

Damien Hirst (b) is a British contemporary artist. His varied practice explores the complex relationships between art, religion, science, life and death. After the closure of Pharmacy Restaurant & Bar (), Sotheby’s hosted a comprehensive auction of the contents of the Notting Hill restaurant designed by Hirst.

This is a signed copy of the original catalogue. The lots included tableware, furniture and wallpaper from the restaurant, as well as original artworks. Of the difference between the two, Hirst states that “Art’s dead.
